Farmers engaged in apple production improving their livelihood

Wolkite, May 15 (GICD)– Farmers engaged in apple production in Eja woreda by getting organized under 44 associations are improving their livelihood, according to the woreda Agriculture and Rural Development Office.

Fruits and Vegetables Expert with the Office, Sahle Haile, said extensive efforts have been underway to expand the production of apples as they can give yield within two years and raise the income of farmers. The farmers could also nurture seedlings and earn additional income.

To this end, a nursery center was established with 480,000 birr last Ethiopian year by the state government taking advantage of the favorable climate, he added.

The farmers have earned 1.6 million birr from cuttings sold to Tigray, Oromia, SNNP and Amhara states last Ethiopian year, he said.

Preparations have also been finalized to supply over 180,000 improved seedlings this rainy season, according to the expert.

The 1,400 farmers embraced by the Eja Fruits Marketing Cooperatives would earn over 3.3 million birr by supplying the demands in place this year, Sahle pointed out.

Some three farmers engaged in the pilot project said they earned between 50,000 to 70,000 birr each from the sale of some 12,000 apple seedlings last year. (END)
