Over
4 million tree seedlings to be transplanted in Gurage Zone

30 (GICD)- More than
four million tree seedlings would be transplanted in Gurage Zone in the
upcoming millennium,the Zonal Administrator said.
Speaking
at a discussion held on the activities of the Zonal Millennium Festival
Council,Gurage Zone Administrator Eristu Yirda said the advent of the
millennium is a time to renew commitment to consolidate the economic gains
registered over the past four years thereby coming out of the
quagmires of poverty.
According
to him,various development activities have been underway in the zone to
celebrate the millennium,including preparations to transplant four million
indigenous tree seedlings in the zone beginning coming June to make the zone
green and more habitable.
Activities
are also underway to enable children in 40 kebeles that have no access to
education receive education in their localities in line with the MDG goal
Education for All,he said,adding that emphasis has also been given to
fighting violence against women and children.
An
exhibition where the Gurage, Kebena and Mareqo nationalities in the zone
display their cultural values would also be organized during the
millennium,he added.
Greener
Ethiopia,an NGO,has pledged to provide two million additional tree seedlings
for transplantation in the millennium.
Religious
leaders,elders,representatives of NGOs,woreda and urban administration
officials as well as civil servants drawn from various sectoral offices
attended the discussion.
