Administrator
of Gurage Zone encouraged by results in all sectors during half fiscal year Wolkite,
March 26 (GICD)- Due
attention should be given to activities that can transform the life of
farmers and urban dwellers by taking into consideration the good beginnings
in the last six months in terms of plan preparation and execution, the
administrator of Gurage Zone said. Presenting
a report to the 12th regular
session of the Zonal Council held in Butajira town, Eristu Yirda said
encouraging results have been registered in education, health,
agriculture, road, investment, water, urban development and other fields in
the last six months. Eristu
said the zone has performed 94.5 percent of the plan in regular and informal
education programs. Additional classrooms have been constructed with over
three million birr raised by the public. He further noted that the community
participation that has been weakened previously has now revived and will
contribute to realize the plan of extending education for all rural kebeles
next Ethiopian year. In
the health sector, vaccination, TB, Leprosy and HIV/AIDS testing kits as
well as drugs against epidemic valued at more than 15.4 million birr were
supplied by the state health bureau and the federal Ministry of Health and
are all utilized. He
added that 5.5 million quintals of crops were harvested from close to
184,000 hectares of land during the 1998/99 harvest year exceeding the
target by 1.9 million birr and attributed the achievement to better supply
and utilization of agricultural inputs, increase of the land covered by
seeds and better professional support. During
the stated period,34 investors with 325.4 million birr capital have been
licensed to engage in agriculture, industry, hotel, tourism and social
services, Eristu said, adding that they have received 2,075 hectares of land
in urban and rural areas. He
pointed out that upon going operational the projects will create 5,358 jobs. (END)
