Primary
education coverage jumps over 94 percent, health to 84
percent in Gurage Zone Wolkite,
March 26 (GICD)
– Primary education coverage of Gurage zone has
reached 94.5 percent and its health coverage 84 percent
while investors with over 325 million birr registered
capital engaged in various sectors during the past six
months. Zonal
Administrator, Eristu Yirdaw, said recently that 40 new
schools have gone operational in an effort to realize
the Millennium Development Goal in the education sector. Some 22
first-cycle schools have also been upgraded to
elementary school and two elementary schools to
comprehensive secondary school, he added. Besides, a
new secondary school built in the zone has begun
rendering services and four comprehensive secondary
schools were upgraded to preparatory school, according
to the administrator. The
participation of girls has reportedly reached 87 and 16
percents in primary and secondary schools respectively,
it was pointed out. He also
indicated that the zonal health coverage has grown to 84
percent in the reported period following the effort
exerted in the past six months to boost the health
coverage of the zone. Some 15,254
individuals have undergone HIV/AIDS test in the
Millennium Anti-HIV/AIDS Campaign, out of which 503
tested positive. Those living with the virus are being
provided anti-retroviral drugs in two hospitals and two
health posts in the zone, he added. Close to
100,200 people of the zone were protected from malaria
by spraying anti-malaria chemicals on 27,383 residential
houses in 36 malaria-prone kebeles and distributing
34,900 chemically treated bed nets. With regard
to investment, 34 investors with an aggregate capital of
over 325.46 million birr have begun practical activities
in the zone on 2,075 hectares of land. Upon going
operational, the investment projects would create jobs
to 5358 individuals, it was indicated. (END)
