Sodo
Woreda farmers harvest over half a million
quintals of crops in current harvest season Wolkite,
March 26 (GICD)
- The Sodo Woreda Agriculture and Rural
Development Office in Gurage Zone disclosed that
farmers in the woreda have harvested over half a
million quintals of crops during the current
harvest year. Office Head Dr
Hailu Tamirat told SNNP State Mass Media Agency
that over half a million quintals were obtained
from 33,682 hectares of land during the 1998/99
E.C harvest season owing to the professional
assistance provided by Development Agents for the
farmers. The harvested
crop this year exceeded that of same period last
year by 46 percent due to mainly the augmented use
of inputs by the farmers, expansion of lands
covered with crops, integrated weed control and
the timely training given to farmers, Dr Hailu
said. According to
him, encouraging results have been obtained from
the promotion and familiarization of modern
agricultural technologies undertaken on 11
varieties of crops by the Zonal Agriculture and
Rural Development Office in collaboration with the
Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research due
to which highland maize, a new crop to the area,
has yielded 23.7 quintals per hectare. Farmers who have
applied the modern agricultural technologies on
their part said their livelihood have improved as
they harvested more cash crops as a result of
the farmer centered development strategies
of the government and the assistance of
development agents. (END)
