Woreda encouraged by efforts underway in popularizing crop species

Wolkite, June 14 (WIC) – Encouraging results have reportedly been registered in the efforts exerted to popularize and spread various crop species in Geta Woreda.

Woreda Chief Administrator, Haile Dewi, said series of trials were carried out on plots of farmers in collaboration with the zonal Agriculture and Rural Development Office and Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR)

Some 40 farmers have subsequently secured 48,468 birr by multiplying Ardu 1260B,a barely species, on their plots and also obtained seeds to further use, he said.

Multiplication of two highland maize species is also underway, Haile added.

Seeds of beans, peas and barley species which proved successful on pilot projects are also being distributed to farmers, it was pointed out.

Activities are also underway to establish an apple plant multiplication center in the woreda so as to scale up the income of farmers by involving them in the production of market-oriented crops. Preparations have been finalized to transplant some 1,000 stocks and 50 seedlings, he said.

Apart from this, multiplication of 860 apple seedlings is underway on plots of seven farmers with finance obtained from the SNNP State Rural Loan Fund Administration Office. (END)
