Gunchire, Agena towns access round-the-clock electric power supply

Wolkite, May 31 (GICD)– Gunchire and Agena towns  of the SNNP State have become beneficiaries of round-the-clock electric power supply.

Inaugurating the electric power services, Deputy Chief Administrator of SNNP State, Shiferaw Shigute, said satisfactory results have been achieved in the development efforts underway in rural parts of the country following the introduction of agricultural–led industrialization policy.

The government is working strenuously to expedite development in rural parts of the country, he said, adding that expansion of infrastructure would be executed equitably so as to sustain the economic growth being registered in the state.

Extensive efforts are underway in the state in order to expand electricity, telecommunications and potable water services, Shiferaw said, adding that the electric power services that have gone operational in the two towns are parts of the plan to expand infrastructural facilities in the state.

The Deputy Chief Administrator who finally noted that there are several natives of Gurage Zone engaged in various investment sectors across the country called upon them to come and invest in the zone taking advantage of the conducive investment climate.

Zonal Chief Administrator, Eristu Yirda, said on his part  that though there are development problems in the zone encouraging activities have been underway to address problems of electricity, telephone and road facilities that prevailed for years in the zone.

Activities which indicate the government’s commitment to address problems of infrastructure are being witnessed in the zone, Eristu said, adding that 100 rural towns, including woreda towns, have accessed electric power services during the past nine months.

The upgrading of Zway-Butajira road is currently underway, he said, adding that activities are also underway to construct roads interlinking various woredas in the zone by the federal and the state governments.

All the woredas in the zone, except one, have become beneficiaries of digital telephone services, according to the Zonal Chief Administrator, who added that 75 percent of the rural kebeles in the zone have also accessed wireless telephone services.

The round-the-clock electric power supply in the towns would benefit close to 60,000 people, it was learnt.
