Beneficiaries
of VCT, reproductive health services increasing in Mehur, Aklil Woreda

Mehur and Aklil Woreda Health office of Gurage Zone said the pubic in the
woreda is increasingly getting accustomed to undergoing voluntary HIV/AIDS
test and using reproductive health services. Head of HIV/AIDS
Prevention and Control Sector with the Office, Dessie Gebre, told the Gurage
Zone Information and Culture Department recently that the growth in the
number of VCT beneficiaries is attributable to the awareness raising
education given at schools and various social institutions as well as the
strengthened continuation of the Millennium Anti-HIV/AIDS Campaign. Accordingly
2,340 people have undergone VCT over the past eight months alone exceeding
the annual plan to enable 1,000 get the services by more than twofold, he
said, adding that 31 of those were found to be HIV positive. Health Extension
Expert with the Office, Alemayehu Fikre, said on his part more than 12,700
mothers have benefited from reproductive health services over the past eight
months while the number of mothers who benefited from the same service
throughout the previous year had been 8,302. Though the
growth in the number of mothers benefiting from reproductive health services
due to the strengthened effort on awareness raising education is
encouraging, Alemayehu however said more and continuous works are yet to be
done in this regard. (END)
