Beneficiaries of VCT, reproductive health services increasing in Mehur, Aklil Woreda

Wolkite, April 24 (GICD) - Mehur and Aklil Woreda Health office of Gurage Zone said the pubic in the woreda is increasingly getting accustomed to undergoing voluntary HIV/AIDS test and using reproductive health services.

Head of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Sector with the Office, Dessie Gebre, told the Gurage Zone Information and Culture Department recently that the growth in the number of VCT beneficiaries is attributable to the awareness raising education given at schools and various social institutions as well as the strengthened continuation of the Millennium Anti-HIV/AIDS Campaign.

Accordingly 2,340 people have undergone VCT over the past eight months alone exceeding the annual plan to enable 1,000 get the services by more than twofold, he said, adding that 31 of those were found to be HIV positive.

Health Extension Expert with the Office, Alemayehu Fikre, said on his part more than 12,700 mothers have benefited from reproductive health services over the past eight months while the number of mothers who benefited from the same service throughout the previous year had been 8,302.

Though the growth in the number of mothers benefiting from reproductive health services due to the strengthened effort on awareness raising education is encouraging, Alemayehu however said more and continuous works are yet to be done in this regard.
